The problem with being creative is your creativity. Being creative means you are thinking ‘outside of the box.’ You are attempting to come up with ideas and information which is outside people’s normal experience in certain situations. You are attempting to produce something new and innovative and as a result you are very likely to receive criticism. People like things to be the same. They like to recognise what you are doing and so are nervous of new ways of doing things if you produce something which seems strange and different.
Many people prefer to work in groups or with a partner when they do creative work. In general, do whatever works for you. Activities, such as writing, usually require being alone, though some writing, like making up jokes, is often stimulated by group interaction. Screen plays are often shared by several writers. Construction art, installation art, large scale works frequently require a group of people, although the original work, often a small version of the work that will eventually be built, is usually done by one artist.
Most of the creative types, dancers, artist, writers, and the like give up the work they love in order to pay the rent and put food on their table. Few have been able to find ways to use their talents to make money and support their creative expression. Self doubt is compounded by comments such as…”You had better keep your day job” or You can’t earn a living doing that,” from family and friends. Don’t give up your dreams. It is possible to be successful and happily, creatively employed.
