How to Stop Trying to Be Creative, and Just Create

As a women’s life coach I meet many people who would like to be more creative. I’ve found the problem to be lack of creative freedom, not creative inability. Somewhere down the line they had their creative endeavors squelched by a harsh critique, a disapproving parent, a friend who was “just kidding”, or a superior who could never be pleased. Just one of those scenarios is enough to make anyone think twice about putting themselves out there creatively.

How to Spark Your Creativity

Only a very select few of us in the human species can be creative, right? The world is divided into those who create and those who cannot create. And if you happen to be one of those who is not creative, then you have to give up on the idea of ever painting, photographing, writing, and anything else that can be considered dreamy or romantic or creative, right? Wrong! Despite what all of the artists and authors tell you, there is no secret inner creative gene. You are not born an artist. You don’t have to have “an artist’s eye” to be able to see beauty and to be able to create something all your own. Don’t buy into the hype. That’s all it is: hype. Even if you are a business brainiac who has never picked up a paintbrush, you can create something special. Oh, it may not (and probably won’t be) a Mona Lisa. But, the important thing to note here is that it will be something that you create. Something that you can look at and be proud of. But what does it take to actually create something? Can I Become More Creative?

The “blockage” which sometimes visits writers and artists is one of the more miserable experiences. Because we often measure our worth by our ability to create, we take it rather hard when this ability is frustrated. Sometimes we begin to doubt ourselves. We might wonder if we only had one trick up our sleeve. At such moments we may be briefly exasperated, but because artists are naturally sensitive people, there is also a risk of retreating from our work. These experiences may provoke us into long bouts of reflection. But while careful self analysis can be useful, it can also be toxic.
